Mourinho: "My men gave a fantastic performance and I'm proud of them; we deserved to win"

Jose Mourinho was proud of his men despite the elimination of the Champions League against Bayern Munchen.
"I think it's difficult for any team to reach the semifinals two straight campaigns and it's also difficult for a coach to reach them six times in eight years. We deserved to win because both games were tight. It is more difficult to play this match when you're still in the fight to win the league title than when you're not. I remember the semifinals I lost with Chelsea against Liverpool. They faced Fulham in the previous clash with their reserve players, while we used our main men in our weekend clash and ended up suffering from that."

"It's our fault because we would have used different players in our previous game if we weren't fighting to win the league title. My men gave a fantastic performance. It is difficult to overcome a 2-1 result. They knew they couldn't make any mistakes and felt great pressure. They were also exhausted in the penalty shootout. Together, both sides missed five penalties. Only those who shoot miss. I don't miss because I don't shoot them. Those who miss have balls and aren't selfish. They do their best for the team. I am incredibly proud of my men."

"Everyone makes mistakes. Superhumans only exist in the movies. These men are the best at their level, but people criticise them when they miss a shot. These critics are like people who get exhausted by climbing two flights of stairs and badly need a lift. My men ran like animals despite the pressure and missed in the final stretch, but what do you expect them to do? Would you rather see them die or see Bayern drawing the match? They played to the limit. I'm not here to make excuses, especially for our opponent. Teams that win two or three titles in one season achieve something incredible, but it is very difficult to reach the semifinals in two consecutive campaigns."
"The final will be disputed between the fifth team in the Premier League and the runners-up in the Bundesliga, and both used their reserve players this weekend, while Real Madrid and Barcelona faced each other in the most important match of the season in the Spanish league. People listened to me when I said the calendar had to be adjusted in these circumstances in Italy, and it made me happy. I don't have that power or enjoy such respect for my opinions here in Spain. We've started the most important month of the season with mid-week games and it's resulted in yesterday's and tonight's results. Bayern won and were luckier than us."

"The squad feels proud. The players know they have nothing to be sorry for. I've told them to go home to their wives and girlfriends and not hide because they have nothing to be ashamed about. I will absolutely try to win this title again with this team. I want to win with these players. It was important for the club and for us to win the Copa del Rey last season. We need six points to win the league and it would be fantastic to do so. This team has great room for improvement and so does the club. Clubs have to adapt to the times. If they believe I can continue to add to the team by staying on, and my players believe so too, then I feel I will stay."

"I feel the pressure of knowing my players are subjected to great pressure. I currently enjoy the joy of others more than my own, and the same goes during bad times. That's why this hurts. These players have worked very hard. There are four games left in the season and we have to take the six points we need like we've done till now: on our own. We worked hard and fought mightily. We will have had a good season if we win the league title and it will allow my men to feel they've done a good job. We will be here fighting for the Champions League again next season."
"The final will be a good match and I would like Chelsea to win, but I have great respect for Bayern Munchen. Chelsea were heroic yesterday and I know some people believe they are the lords of the game and therefore entitled to criticise Chelsea or Inter Milan's victory two years ago. I know the Blues behaved like heroes. Chelsea deserve it and Bayern are there too."

Bayern Munich now 2/5 favourites to beat Chelsea in Champions League final

The Bavarians set up a tie against Roberto Di Matteo's men in Munich after they overturned a first-leg deficit, winning their tie on penalties against Real Madrid

After the drama of Tuesday evening's semi-final which saw an upset when a defensively solid Chelsea side saw off the challenge of tournament favourites Barcelona at Camp Nou, Wednesday was just as dramatic as Bayern Munich sealed their place in the final and they are now 2/5 to lift the trophy.

Mourinho misses out on Chelsea reunion as Real Madrid are shot down by Bayern

So Chelsea won't face Jose Mourinho in the Champions League final, but after a semi-final of the utmost drama in Madrid, the occasion may well still be a Special One.

On May 19 in Munich, Jose Mourinho and the players that used to idolise him at Stamford Bridge won't come face with each other on the greatest stage in club football after his Real Madrid team lost to Bayern Munich on penalties at Santiago Bernabeu.

Be it flirting from afar or battling head-to-head, the Portuguese boss and Chelsea remain intrinsically linked, but this year they will continue as star-crossed lovers.

When Mourinho announced to his players that he would be leaving west London in September 2007 it never really looked like the end of their great love story. It was a bolt from and to the Blues.

At the time, Didier Drogba cried in the dressing room. John Terry, as is so often his wont on the pitch, remonstrated with club officials, desperate to keep the man who had brought the league title to Stamford Bridge for the first time in half a century and kick-started Roman Abramovich's revolution.

"People can't understand how much I love Chelsea," said the Real coach in March. "I'd love to play them in the final."

That dream slipped through his fingers however, as he slumped to his knees in the Bernabeu technical area and watched Bastian Schweinsteiger send the Bavarians through from the spot.

For Mourinho, the opportunity to parade the prize that Roman Abramovich wants more than any other will have been tantalising. Indeed, when his Inter side knocked the Blues out at Stamford Bridge at the last 16 stage two years ago, the self-proclaimed Special One insisted that he took no pleasure in ending the Russian oligarch's Champions League dream.

"I love Chelsea, I love this stadium, I love these people but I am a professional," said Mourinho after the 1-0 win for the Italians in west London, securing a 3-1 victory on aggregate.

"I celebrated a lot in the dressing room. I'm happy because I won. I am not happy my ex-players lost, because Roman [Abramovich] lost or because the fans go home unhappy."

But Mourinho, you sense, never forgets. His house-hunting trip to London earlier this season amid the final weeks of Andre Villas-Boas' unsuccessful reign merely demonstrated the Portuguese's tendency to relish in his former club's turmoil.

He would never admit it, but beating Chelsea, no, beating Abramovich in Munich next month would have been on his mind.

Instead, Chelsea will face Bayern, a team who, like the Blues, had their own task deemed by some to be nearly impossible in the semi-finals.

Jupp Heynckes' side, like Di Matteo's men, have seen their domestic title in the arms of another side for successive seasons, yet with the world awaiting a Clasico in Bavaria, neither of world football's supposed two greatest teams will participate.

It will be a showpiece that not many will have expected when the semi-final draw was made in March and Chelsea will enter it with heightened expectations, be them foolish or not. For now they have avoided Mourinho. The reunion will have to wait

Real Madrid 2 - 1 Bayern Munich

B
ayern Munich will face Chelsea in the Champions League final after beating Real Madrid in a penalty shoot-out following an engrossing semi-final.
Real trailed by a goal from the first leg but two Cristiano Ronaldo strikes - the first a penalty, the second a neat low finish - put them in control.
However, Arjen Robben levelled the tie for Bayern with a spot kick of his own.
No further goals meant a shoot-out, which Bastian Schweinsteiger settled to send his team to a final on home turf.
The midfielder was not his side's only hero in the shoot-out. Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer played a major part, saving Real's first two penalties - from Ronaldo and Kaka as Mario Gomez and David Alaba scored for Bayern.
This was the second time in significant Champions League shoot-outs that Ronaldo had missed from the spot after also failing for Manchester United in the 2008 final against Chelsea. It also means the two players considered the world's best have both missed key penalties in successive days following Lionel Messi's miss for Barcelona last night.
  • David Alaba (Bayern) - scored 1-0
  • Cristiano Ronaldo (Real) - saved 1-0
  • Mario Gomez (Bayern) - scored 2-0
  • Kaka (Real) - saved 2-0
  • Toni Kroos (Bayern) - saved 2-0
  • Xabi Alonso (Real) - scored 2-1
  • Phillip Lahm (Bayern) - saved 2-1
  • Serio Ramos (Real) - missed 2-1
  • Bastian Schweinsteiger (Bayern) - scored 3-1
It was a terrible end to the game for the Portuguese winger who had earlier put his side in control with two goals in the first 15 minutes.
The first of these came from the penalty spot as he demonstrated no nerves to stroke home after Alaba had handled Angel di Maria's cross in the box. His second was a superb low finish into the corner of the net after being found by Mesut Ozil in the box.
This set Real on course for the final and a potentially memorable double, following what had been a great week in which they have virtually secured the Spanish title as a result of their victory at Barcelona on Saturday.
It also set up the inticing prospect of a match-up between Real boss Jose Mourinho - looking for an historic third Champions League title with a third different club - against his former club Chelsea, the only major club he has failed to lead to European glory.
Instead it is Jupp Heynckes who can now claim his second European crown on 19 May after leading Real to the trophy in 1998.
His side were simply not prepared to allow their dream of a final on home soil slip away so easily and they hit back with a penalty of their own midway through the first half when Mario Gomez tumbled in the box under a challenge from Pepe and Robben made no mistake from the spot.
It was a fitting reward for the German side who had matched Real in the first half and shown plenty of the attacking intent that Mourinho had warned would mean they were likely to score at the Bernabeu.
Had Gomez demonstrated the sharpness that had brought him 12 goals in the competition this season Bayern could have led at the break but he saw a low shot saved by Casillas and glanced a header wide.
Gomez also had the clearest opportunity of a very tight second half and extra-time but instead of hitting the ball first time with the goal at his mercy he dwelt and Real cleared.
It seemed only fitting a tie that had been so evenly matched over two legs should be settled by a penalty shoot-out.
After Neuer's early heroics, Casillas almost rescued his side with two saves of his own from Toni Kroos and Phillip Lahm, but Sergio Ramos then blazed over for the home side to tee-up Schweinsteiger's moment of glory.
The win came at a cost, though, for the German side, who will be without Alaba, Holger Badstuber and Luiz Gustavo after they picked up bookings

YouTube loses court battle over music clips

YouTube could face a huge bill for royalties after it lost a court battle in Germany over music videos.
YouTube home page
A court in Hamburg ruled that YouTube is responsible for the content that users post to the video sharing site.
It wants the video site to install filters that spot when users try to post music clips whose rights are held by royalty collection group, Gema.
The German industry group said in court that YouTube had not done enough to stop copyrighted clips being posted.
Rights battle
YouTube said it took no responsibility for what users did, but responded when told of copyright violations.
"Today's ruling confirms that YouTube as a hosting platform cannot be obliged to control the content of all videos uploaded to the site," said a spokesperson for the video site.
"We remain committed to finding a solution to the music licensing issue in Germany that will benefit artists, composers, authors, publishers and record labels, as well as the wider YouTube community," they added.
Gema's court case was based on 12 separate music clips posted to the website. The ruling concerns seven of the 12 clips.
If YouTube is forced to pay royalties for all the clips used on the site it will face a huge bill.
Gema represents about 60,000 German song writers and musicians.
If enforced, the ruling could also slow the rate at which video is posted to the site as any music clip would have to be cleared for copyright before being used.
Currently, it is estimated that about 60 hours of video is uploaded to YouTube worldwide every minute.
YouTube owner Google has yet to comment on the ruling.
The court case began in 2010 and came after talks between YouTube and Gema about royalties broke down. In 2009, the stalemate meant that videos from German recording firms were briefly blocked on the site.
Gema has rung up several victories against sites it has claimed are using music without paying royalties.
In 2009, file-sharing site Rapidshare was told to start filtering songs users were uploading following action by Gema. In March, 2012 a second judgement told Rapidshare to be more proactive when hunting down content pirated by users.
Music streaming site Grooveshark pulled out of Germany claiming licencing rates set by Gema made it impossible to run a profitable business in the country.

US introduces $60 LED light bulb

A prize-winning light bulb that lasts for 20 years is going on sale in the US on Sunday - also known as Earth Day.
Philips LED bulb

Made by Dutch electronics giant Philips, the bulb swaps filaments for light-emitting diodes to provide illumination.
Using LEDs endows the light with a long life and a hefty price tag. The first versions are set to cost $60 (£37).
Philips has arranged discounts with shops that will sell the bulb meaning some could buy it for only $20 (£12).
Production ban
The bulb triumphed in the Bright Tomorrow competition run by the US Department of Energy that aimed to find an energy efficient alternative to the 60-watt incandescent light bulb.
The DoE challenged firms to develop a design that gave out a warm light similar to that from an incandescent bulbs but was much more energy efficient.
Philips was the only entrant for the competition and its design underwent 18 months of testing before being declared a winner.
A cheaper and less efficient version of the LED bulb is already sold by Philips in the US and Europe.
LED bulbs face competition from compact fluorescent lights which are almost as energy efficient and cost a lot less.
Sales of more energy efficient bulbs are being aided by official moves to end production of higher wattage incandescent bulbs.
Production of 100 watt bulbs has ceased in the US and Europe. Production of 60 watt bulbs has been stopped in Europe and is being phased out in the US. From 2014, incandescent bulbs of 40 watts or above will be banned in the US.

US website covering China's Bo Xilai scandal hacked

A US-based Chinese-language website that has reported extensively on the Bo Xilai scandal in China says it was crippled for several hours by a concerted hacking attack.

The Boxun website had to move to a new webhost after the denial-of-service attack on Friday, its manager said.
Boxun has reported for several weeks on the scandal surrounding Bo Xilai.
Mr Bo was removed from key political posts as his wife was investigated for the murder of a British businessman.
Boxun's original webhost, Name.com, told the Associated Press news agency that the hack was one of the biggest in the company's history.
It reportedly followed an emailed threat that it would be attacked if it did not disable the site.
It is not clear who launched the attacks, but the manager of Boxun.com, Watson Meng, was quoted as saying he believed they were ordered by China's security services.
A denial-of-service attack involves hackers paralysing a website by bombarding it with enquiries.
Stream of reports
Boxun.com, based in North Carolina, was set up 12 years ago by Mr Meng to campaign for human rights and democracy in China.
It has published a stream of reports and allegations about the fate of Bo Xilai, the politician at the centre of China's biggest political scandal in years.
Mr Bo was sacked as Communist Party boss of the south-western city of Chongqing, and suspended from other key political posts, amid an official investigation into corruption and allegations that his wife was involved in the murder of UK businessman Neil Heywood.
Mr Heywood was found dead in Chongqing in November 2011.
China routinely blocks web content that it deems inappropriate, but reports on Boxun are often repeated on micro-blogging sites in China by people who use software to circumvent internet restrictions.
The BBC's Martin Patience in Chongqing says that with more than half a billion internet users, China is finding it increasingly difficult to control the flow of information.
Chinese authorities have stressed that their investigation into Mr Bo and his family is purely a legal matter

Jennifer Hudson testifies at family murder trial

US Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Hudson has testified in the trial in Chicago of the man accused of shooting three members of her family in 2008.

William Balfour, 30, is charged with three counts of first-degree murder. He has pleaded not guilty.
Struggling to hold back tears, Ms Hudson said on the opening day of the trial that her family had not wanted her sister Julia to marry Mr Balfour.
Mr Balfour is accused of killing Ms Hudson's mother, brother and a nephew.
Darnell Donerson, 57, and Jason Hudson, 29, were found shot dead in their Chicago home on 24 October. The body of seven-year-old Julian King was found days later.
Mr Balfour was arrested shortly after the killings.

"None of us wanted her (Julia) to marry him," Ms Hudson told the Cook County court on Monday.
"We did not like how he treated her," she added.
Ms Hudson was the first witness called to the stand after prosecutors and attorneys for William Balfour finished their opening statements.
Hundreds of potential witnesses could also be called to testify during the trial which is expected to last at least a month.
If convicted, Mr Balfour faces a life sentence.
The prosecution alleges that he shot the three in a jealous rage because he was upset that his estranged wife had been seeing another man.
Ms Hudson, a finalist on the 2004 series of American Idol, won an Oscar in 2007 for her supporting role in the musical Dreamgirls.
